Medical Mission Trip - 2024
A Life-Changing Journey: The Derm Institute of West Michigan’s Medical Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic
Last year, in partnership with Terra One Health, the Derm Institute of West Michigan embarked on a remarkable medical mission to the Dominican Republic. This initiative, part of the Dominican Republic Global Outreach program, was more than just a healthcare project. It was a commitment to serving underserved communities, addressing critical health issues, and bridging care gaps while fostering profound human connections.
The Need for Medical Missions in Haiti
The mission's purpose was clear—to provide essential medical care to areas often overlooked by the global healthcare system. Our dedicated team of dermatology experts, treated hundreds of patients, conducted health screenings, educated communities on preventive care, and addressed a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions.
Garrett Adams, CFO at The Derm Institute, described it as "life-changing," saying, “Not only were we able to treat hundreds of people, but we were also able to feed them, hear their stories, and connect with them. I went there hoping to make a difference but came back profoundly changed, grateful for the experience, and inspired to continue to serve others in need.”

Making an Impact One Patient at a Time
Beyond the clinical care provided, this trip was about making personal connections. It was about seeing healthcare as an act of humanity. Dr. Kristi Hawley summed up the experience beautifully, stating, “Participating in the medical mission to the Dominican Republic was a profoundly humbling experience. It served as a powerful reminder that the practice of dermatology extends far beyond clinical treatment; it is about human connection, dignity, and service. Witnessing the resilience and gratitude of patients who face so many challenges with grace deeply impacted me both professionally and personally. It reaffirmed my commitment to compassionate care and reminded me of the true privilege it is to serve others through medicine.”
Why Medical Missions Matter
Healthcare disparities remain a global issue, with countless communities lacking access to even the most basic medical care. The Dominican Republic Global Outreach program aims to bridge these gaps, connecting professionals passionate about making a difference with the people and places that need them most.
Programs like these are about more than just providing immediate care; they’re about equipping communities with knowledge and tools for long-term wellness. They also allow medical providers to step away from standard clinic settings and see the broader picture of global health challenges.
